My Garden/Flowers - 2012

March 19, 2012

I cleaned up along the ditch across the back of my yard and have placed sedum transplants there.  This is a quickly spreading ground cover plant with wonderful

late summer/fall color.

Planted every 12-16inches.

I watered them with water containing 4-3-3 fertilizer (2 oz./gallon), 0-0-8 Kelp/Potash (1 oz./gallon), and 0-12-0 Bonemeal (1 oz./gallon)

I will take new photographs each week to show

the progress of these plant.

March 20, 2012

I have decided to chance it. The NOAA 10-14 and 14-18 day forecasts all show a huge Above Average Temperature area in the central USA. This will take time to move east, so I think the above average weather will be in place until at least mid-April, which is when these would be planted anyway.

Two rows of Sugar Snap Peas with Bonemeal, 0-12-0, and Kelp/Potash, 0-0-8, added at the rate of 1 oz. concentrate each to 1 gallon of water sprinkled on the rows after planting.

One row of beets, one row of spinach, and a half row of Romaine lettuce with the same mixture added to the soil after planting.

These two soil amendments help in getting a strong root system established. After true leaves are present, then a foliar feed with 4-3-3 Fertilizer will be added.

April 11th Update:

The weather has done a flip-flop and we are now experiencing cooler than normal temperatures.

All my seeds seem to be OK, although they are just now germinating.

The sedum also shows signs that it is just waiting for warmer weather for it to begin growing.

Next application of 4-3-3 Fertilizer mixed with 0-0-8 Sulfate of Potash will be this week.

April 25th Update:

The weather has been anything but favorable.  Cool weather with many below freezing nights

culminated in a 3" heavy, wet snow falling on Monday, April 23rd.  After returning from a

trip to NC, I was anxious to see how the garden was doing.  The Beets seemed to have suffered

the most and will have to be replanted.

And the sedum ground cover near the drainage ditch is at about the same growth stage as before.

Half row of Lettuce is doing OK

Spinach now has several "true" leaves.

Only a few gaps in the sugar snap peas to filling with new seed.

Check back here from time to time as I show you the progress of my garden.
